A preprint works out what a sub-light warp bubble would look like crossing the atmosphere

The Debrief reported on 27 August 2026 on "Radiative Signatures from Warp Drives Traveling Through the Earth’s Atmosphere", an arXiv preprint by Shaun Fell and Avi Loeb. Their hydrodynamic simulations put atmospheric temperatures around a bubble moving faster than 5% of light speed at roughly 2.2×10^11 K, producing luminosities above a terawatt. The authors are explicit that the work does not establish that warp drives or craft exist; it supplies a signature to test glowing-orb reports against. The paper is a preprint and peer review is pending.

What it means It is the falsifiable half of a field that mostly is not: a predicted brightness a telescope can go and fail to find.
