Agent Plugins 1.0.0 proposes one vendor-neutral format for packaging agent skills and MCP servers

Vercel released Agent Plugins 1.0.0 on August 6, 2026, an open standard that packages agent skills and MCP servers into portable plugins built around a root plugin.json manifest plus fixed locations for components. Each client keeps control of installation, distribution, policy and its own capabilities. Vercel says the format is supported at launch across ChatGPT and Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Kiro and VS Code.

What it means If you maintain internal agent tooling, this is the first credible attempt at one packaging format that works across the major coding clients instead of one per client.
