Anthropic puts 10,000 free and discounted Claude seats in front of academic researchers

On 27 August 2026 Anthropic opened 10,000 Claude Team seats to scientists at academic and nonprofit institutions for a year — free standard seats, or premium seats at $15/month with five times the usage limits — open to principal investigators or equivalent. It also widened its AI for Science programme to any researcher and beyond biology, with up to $50,000 in credits per project, and described a Claude Science product that wires in common research tools and emits auditable artifacts. A separate Mythos-class access programme, run with the US government, is enrolling its first life-sciences participants; biology and chemistry researchers stay on Opus-class models for now because the Fable models still refuse professional biology and drug-development queries.

What it means The dual-use refusal behaviour is now an explicit tier boundary — which model a scientist can reach depends on the field they work in, not just what they pay.
