Autonomous excavators start digging on live US infrastructure jobsites
Bedrock Robotics said on 17 August 2026 that excavators retrofitted with its Operator sensor-and-compute kit are running fully autonomously on customer sites: a Nevada water-treatment facility with Sundt Construction, a multi-million-cubic-yard earthwork site with Champion Site Prep in Texas, and a 1.2 million cubic yard civil sitework project with Zachry Construction. Sundt’s chief executive framed the value as more predictable schedules and equipment utilisation rather than headcount, with crews moved to work where experience matters. Construction Dive separately reports rising jobsite traction for small task-specific robots, with Nvidia among the investors backing the segment.
What it means Named contractors, named projects and a stated operating mode is the evidence bar an owner needs before believing an autonomy pitch.
