Boston Dynamics gives Atlas a four-finger, 13-joint hand built for mass production

On 1 October 2026 Boston Dynamics announced a redesigned hand for its Atlas humanoid. It has four fingers, no pinky and 13 degrees of freedom, is directly actuated, and is designed for mass production in the tens or hundreds of thousands. The company says the hand is built for high-fidelity simulation so manipulation skills can be learned in simulation and transferred to the robot.

What it means A leading humanoid maker is choosing a rugged, cheap hand over a humanlike one, which suggests what will actually ship in volume.
