The UK is trying to halve householder planning decision times with a Gemini-built assistant

Google DeepMind is working with the UK government, Google Cloud, Faculty and the planning authorities in Barnet, Camden and Dorset on a prototype that handles data extraction and case analysis for planning officers, with a stated goal of cutting application decision times by 50%. Householder applications are nearly 70% of planning applications each year. Following the earlier Extract tool from the government's Incubator for AI, the government plans to make the new tool available to all councils from 2027.

What it means A paperwork backlog that has throttled British house-building for decades is being attacked as a document-understanding problem — which is the shape a surprising number of 'unsolvable' administrative problems turn out to have. The 50% is a target, not yet a result.
