Claude Code has been quietly running on Bun's Rust rewrite since mid-June — and almost nobody noticed
Bun creator Jarred Sumner disclosed in his 'Rewriting Bun in Rust' post that Claude Code v2.1.181 (released June 17) and later ship the Rust port of Bun — startup got about 10% faster on Linux and otherwise nobody noticed. Simon Willison independently verified it on July 19 by inspecting his own installation: the binary embeds Bun v1.4.0 with 563 Rust source paths. The Rust port is now also installable as Bun canary.
What it means The runtime under one of the most-used AI coding tools was swapped out in production across millions of devices without incident — 'boring is good' is what a successful large-scale rewrite looks like.
