Amodei: Anthropic has never advocated a ban on open-weight models — the fear is authoritarian frontier capability

Responding to an open letter in which Nvidia, Hugging Face, Meta, Microsoft and Mistral urged policymakers against broad 'premature restrictions' on open-weight models, Dario Amodei wrote that Anthropic 'has never advocated for a ban on open-weights models' and called open weights without dangerous capabilities 'a public good.' His stated fear is authoritarian governments reaching permanent military superiority, and biological as well as cyber misuse; he notes, citing a UK AI Security Institute report, that released weights cannot be withdrawn.

What it means The open-weights fight is being argued as a chips-and-capability question rather than a licensing one — which is exactly where the compute war gets decided.
