GitHub Copilot can now operate desktop apps with computer use

On 1 October 2026 GitHub put computer use into public preview in Copilot CLI and the Copilot app on macOS and Windows. Copilot can read, click, type, scroll and navigate across desktop applications, including GUI-only software with no API, command line or MCP integration. It asks for approval before controlling an app, and organisation settings can disable the feature.

What it means Agents that drive desktop apps can reach legacy tools with no API, but they also widen what a hijacked agent can touch, so check the organisation-level off switch.
