Google puts study tools into Search and a learning hub into Gemini
On 19 August 2026 Google shipped a bundle of student-facing features across two surfaces. In Search: AI-generated interactive visuals and 3D simulations for hard topics, custom practice quizzes in science, maths and languages, Lens-based explanation of a concept or a mistake from a photo, and study documents generated from uploaded PDFs, slides or handwritten notes. In Gemini: multi-step research reports a student can then talk through conversationally with Gemini Live, functional 3D simulations such as a DNA structure that can be rotated and zoomed, and a dedicated learning hub carrying study notebooks, flashcards and practice quizzes. Most of it is rolling out now; the Lens interactive experiences are dated to the coming weeks.
What it means The free tier of a general assistant now covers most of what a standalone study app sold last year — flashcards, quizzes, notebooks, a photo-to-explanation loop — which resets the floor any paid learning product has to clear to justify its price.
