Microsoft Research's StudentSim tests AI tutors on simulated learners before real students see them

Microsoft Research described StudentSim on 12 October 2026, a research system for evaluating and improving AI tutors before they are tested with real learners. It trains a personalised simulator for each student from publicly available, de-identified learner records, and checks whether each simulator responds like that student and updates after tutor guidance. Across chess, second-language English writing and mathematics, Microsoft reports it beats leading baselines and gives a useful feedback signal for training an AI tutor. Microsoft stresses it is not a product, is not deployed in classrooms and is not meant to replace teachers.

What it means Human studies are the slow, costly step in building tutors. Simulated learners could let teams iterate much faster, as long as the simulators track real students.
