NIH proposes creating an Office of the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer

A Federal Register notice dated 14 October 2026 says the National Institutes of Health is seeking public comment on a proposed reorganisation that would establish an Office of the NIH Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer within the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives in the NIH Office of the Director. The same proposal would move the Office of Dietary Supplements under the Office of Nutrition Research.

What it means A dedicated AI office at the largest US biomedical funder is likely to become the place that sets AI policy for NIH-funded research.
