New York school board rejected a $1.65M Oracle contract as AI scrutiny widened
On 28 August 2026 New York City Panel for Educational Policy declined to approve a $1.65M Oracle contract that officials said underpins school HR systems, with opposition to Oracle and to AI in schools both feeding the vote. Chalkbeat reports the result raises the bar for continuing existing education technology as well as adopting new tools; the Education Department has said it will publish AI and technology guidance before the first day of school on 10 September.
What it means Education-technology procurement is where AI policy actually bites: a board can now sink a back-office renewal over AI concerns, which changes how vendors have to sell into districts.
