Nvidia puts $1.5B into SoftBank’s SB Energy and backs up to $105B of credit for OpenAI’s Ohio campus
Reported on 17 August 2026: Nvidia will invest $1.5 billion in SoftBank-backed SB Energy and take up to 8 gigawatts of AI computing capacity at the Ports-Pike campus SB Energy is building for OpenAI near Cincinnati, Ohio. Nvidia will also provide up to $105 billion in credit toward the facility, which starts at 4.25GW and could scale to 8GW, and the arrangement makes Nvidia the sole compute supplier on the site. SB Energy and SoftBank plan at least 10GW of new generation — including a 9.2GW natural-gas plant on Department of Energy land — plus $4.2 billion of Ohio grid investment.
What it means Vendor financing at this scale ties chip demand, power generation and one customer’s balance sheet into a single knot — the same wrong-way risk flagged on the $500B collateral backstop a week earlier, now with gas turbines attached.
