OpenAI ships GPT-6 Astra, built for long-horizon autonomous coding

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on 3 September, positioning it as its general-purpose model for long-horizon, autonomous coding and agentic work. GitHub made it generally available inside Copilot the next day, so the model is already reachable in a mainstream tool rather than only through the API.

What it means If you write code with an assistant, the default frontier model behind it changed this week — and it is tuned for long autonomous runs, not single completions.
